Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 2
Recently I was given the chance to review Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 2 (CODMW2) thanks to the Contagious Network. Having played COD since the first inception I was looking forward to this. Previous versions of the game have cost me much lost time in productivity and sleep, but we won’t let that get in the way of a bit of game play.
In the past I have only really played COD on the PC, so getting the PS3 version was going to be a whole new learning experience. Once the game arrived I dedicated an afternoon to getting to grips with the new control system. Going from a keyboard and mouse combo to the PS3 controller takes a bit of getting used to with FPS games. After running thru the training level I soon started to get the hang of things, but doubt I will reach a level of skill equal to that I had on the PC.
The first thing you notice is the visual pleasure. This game is well suited to a large LCD/Plasma screen. The guys at Infinity Ward have put in a lot of effort to get things as realistic as possible and give the immersive feel. Adding to this is the 5.1 audio, so you feel like you’re in the middle of it with gunfire & explosions going off all around, especially when the shit hits the fan, as it does often.
Storyline hasn’t changed all that much when you break it down, Russians vs Americans/coalition etc. but effort has been put into keeping the narrative alive and still make it interesting during the campaign. Then again many don’t care and head straight for the multiplayer online gameplay where all the fun is to be had.
Gameplay thruout the campaign is chaotic and keeps you thinking, no stock up on big guns and blast your way thru (although big guns help). You have to be more tactical and think ahead and on your toes. Surrounds can be useful or deathtraps, depending on their destructive nature, and you will soon find out which it is if you’re not careful.
Once you’ve had enough of playing the campaign there is a variety(6) of online options available to pit yourself against your mates or strangers the world over. Whether it be capture the flag or team deathmatch your bound to have fun, especially with experience points and rewards that allow you extra abilities to gain an advantage over your adversary.
It’s easy to see why CODMW2 is one of the best selling games, as has been its previous flavours and more than likely future releases will carry on the same. If you’re a fan of FPS games it’s a must to add to your stable of games. Anyway I’m off to finish this campaign and get me some Ruskies…..
